  • 8 nights, 9 days
  • 3 hotels, all with lifts
  • [EN] Steady, with Gentle options on every day
  • Up to 16 travellers; it runs with 12 or it does not run

388 / 431 passages on this page have no Arabic yet and are shown in English, marked [EN].

This journey is designed, not yet bookable

  • [EN] Not one road journey on this trip has a traffic-aware measurement. Google Maps routing was unavailable to the designer, so every drive time is OSRM free-flow with about half again added for a coach.
  • [EN] Every visa row is marked verify-before-sale.

Nothing here is contracted and no departure is open. We will not publish a drive time as a real figure until it has been measured, and we will not sell a seat until the hotels, the nurse and the train are in writing.

Why this route, in this order

[EN] The route follows the scholars rather than the map: the Mushaf of Uthman in Tashkent, then Imam al-Bukhari outside Samarkand, then Bahauddin Naqshband outside Bukhara.

[EN] Three cities in nine days, joined by the Afrosiyob high-speed train rather than by coach — which is what keeps every road journey on this trip under an hour and a half.

And what we left out

  • [EN] Khiva is left out. It is a further four hours beyond Bukhara each way, which no amount of re-planning brings inside the pace of this trip.

The shape of a day

  • [EN] Days start at 09:30 or later, with breakfast until 10:00.
  • [EN] Lunch around Dhuhr, then a full afternoon rest at the hotel before an evening outing.
  • [EN] 1.3 to 1.8 km of walking a day, in three to five segments of no more than 600 m, and at most two flights of stairs with a rail.
  • [EN] Two folding wheelchairs and two cane-seats travel on the coach, and a rest seat is kept at every stop.

The one place we break our own rule, and the real number

[EN] Four hours and eight minutes, on Day 8, from Bukhara to Tashkent — by train, not by coach.

[EN] The Afrosiyob is the comfortable option. The coach alternative over the same distance is far worse, and there is no faster train.

It is a registered exception, and it travels with conditions:

  • [EN] Business class where it is available, so the seat reclines and the carriage is walkable.
  • [EN] The nurse checks each traveller every hour and encourages a walk down the carriage.
  • [EN] It is disclosed as a four-hour rail journey — on this page, on the itinerary and on the family decision sheet.
  • [EN] It falls on a slow morning with a late check-out, so nobody is rushed on either side of it.
  • [EN] A comfort stop at least every 90 minutes.
  • [EN] No breaching leg on arrival or departure day where avoidable.
  • [EN] The nurse does a comfort and hydration check at each stop.
  • [EN] The day carries no walking beyond its pace level.
  • [EN] The real time appears on the itinerary page, the trip’s own page and the family decision sheet.

We tell you this rather than writing “about four hours”, because a family deciding whether their father can sit on a train that long deserves the real figure.

Who travels with them

  • [EN] The Rafeeqa — a female Arabic speaker with a nursing background, flying with the group from Dubai

[EN] She is not practising as a nurse in Uzbekistan. Nursing care is given by the locally registered nurse, and by nobody else.

  • [EN] A locally registered nurse, seconded from a licensed clinic, who travels with the group for all nine days with her own train seat and hotel room

Registered with [EN] the Uzbek register of nurses, through a licensed clinic. [EN] Her registration is verified before departure. The secondment is not yet contracted.

  • [EN] A 24-hour doctor line, on retainer from an international clinic in Tashkent, advising by phone or video

[EN] On retainer. Not yet contracted.

  • [EN] An Arabic-speaking licensed local guide for all nine days

    [EN] Licence verified before departure.

  2. [EN] The clinic’s 24-hour doctor line advises, or an ambulance is called to the named hospital for that city.
  3. [EN] The Rafeeqa calls the family and the insurer’s assistance line.
  4. [EN] Evacuation through the insurer if it is needed.

[EN] The Imam al-Bukhari complex at Hartang is the furthest point from hospital care on this trip, about 40 minutes from the Samarkand hospitals. The nurse carries the full kit that day.

Medicines, before you book

  • [EN] Uzbekistan restricts some psychotropic medicines and some containing codeine or tramadol. Check the official list of medicines for personal import before booking.
  • [EN] Travellers carry their prescriptions and a doctor’s letter in English; a Russian translation is advised.
  • [EN] A portable oxygen concentrator needs the airline’s written approval in advance, and a separate check with the railway.

The screening, before the booking is confirmed

  • [EN] A medical questionnaire and a call with the nurse before the booking is confirmed.
  • [EN] A medication list, and a doctor’s letter in English for any controlled medicine.
  • [EN] Able to walk 500 m unaided on flat ground and to climb one flight of about fifteen steps with a rail.

الصلاة والطعام

[EN] Jumu‘ah twice: at Hazrat Imam in Tashkent on the second day, and at the Minor Mosque on the last. A qibla-marked prayer room is requested at every hotel.

[EN] In Uzbekistan women often do not attend Friday prayer and some mosques have no women’s section. Whether there is one at Hazrat Imam and at the Minor Mosque is confirmed in writing before any departure is sold. Where there is none, women pray in the hotel prayer room with the Rafeeqa. Friday prayer is not obligatory for women or for travellers; it is offered, never pressed.
